Preparation for the Big Show

Why do performers do a dress rehearsal? So they can get more comfortable with what opening night will be like, when they do it for real. While we went through our dress rehearsal expecting it to be the actual thing, I can absolutely say that I'm feeling more comfortable with the whole process now that we were entered into it once. I know what the waiting area is like, I can picture the staff, I met a friendly anesthesiologist, and I'm reassured that this surgery sounds somewhat routine. The seriousness of it and the very description of what happens (somewhere on this blog, about a month ago) are both quite frightening. But I'm less anxious now.

Meanwhile, my mom got into a conversation with a friend who was calling to check on her knee (yes, lots of other medical stuff going on in my family this month). The friend unexpectedly said her great granddaughter had just gotten done with surgery because of fused plates in her head. Same thing.

I can't begin to express how grateful we are for all the support we have been receiving from friends and relatives. It's been tremendously helpful to know there are so many people caring about us and Zyle. I hope even those who contributed food and help last week -- Sara, Lalah, Carissa, Nicki, Katherine, Lara, Kristin, Tina and Enoch -- don't feel it was wasted effort. I feel bad that my mother-in-law, Sara, drove 350 miles just to turn around and do it again this weekend, but I am ever so grateful for her help. And having the food that was delivered on Monday and Tuesday was absolutely just the right timing. (It's all gone, by the way -- delish!). And we've received packages of goodies, cards in the mail, posts, emails from distant friends, phone calls from relatives. Feeling the love. Thank you all.

Rescheduled date: Monday, December 7th, 8:15 a.m.

  1. It's great to hear that you are feeling better about the surgery now. When my mom had major surgery last December, we went to the hospital beforehand to scope out the waiting area, figure out where things were, meet her care coordinator, etc. That familiarity really did help a lot on surgery day.

Glad you are feeling the love. That's what we were all hoping for.
