Sleep

I walked in at 4:40 to a beautiful, peaceful sleeping baby. He was on his tummy with his head on its side. The peaceful sleeping didn't last long before he started itching, raising his taped hand to his nose. He lifted himself up and there's some blood drainage underneath him, as he was sleeping on the drain side of his head. The pressure left a clear outline of the sutures around the drain. Written in blood.

The intensive care unit has rules about how many adults are allowed in, when they're allowed in, and how many people can sleep where. There's a pull out chair in Zyle's room, and the staff in the unit have the linens and pillows for us. Only one parent is allowed to sleep in the room; the other must go to the sleep room. It's rather communal, reminding me of some dance weekends in the comings and goings. It's like a big living room with ten chairs placed around it, a few end tables interspersed. These are the same pull-out chairs as in the hospital room. I slept fairly well, all things considered, with several interruptions for people arriving and arranging themselves. There are two bathrooms with showers there, too. Heavy thick loud doors.

Seth came by to tell me when he was going to sleep, and he seems to have gotten just a little rest here in the room. We have tag-teamed now, as the room is a bit too distracting.

Zyle cried and sat up when the nurse was taking his temperature, but despite the swelling he clearly looked more like himself. He knew it was me with him, and I think that comforted him. They were playing Beautiful Dreamer earlier; one of the songs I modified after Jex was born to sing to each of my Beautiful Babies.

  1. Poor little bean - so much poking and prodding to endure! Erin had a restless night last night - maybe she is commiserating with Zyle on some level we can't see?

  2. Please get as much rest as your mind will allow so you can be all you need to be in the coming days.

  3. Maddy saw Zyle's picture last night and expressed her concern. We told her that he's doing well, and she said she wants "Zyle-bear" to get better so he can come back to play with her soon.
